The Florida Department of Transportation will close the Southern Boulevard Bridge from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. Friday for work on the bridge's mechanical components. Traffic will be detoured to the Royal Park Bridge via U.S. 1/South Dixie Highway and State Road A1A, FDOT said Tuesday in a news release. The contractor will be replacing one of the four pinion shaft gears that operates the bascule bridge's movable spans, project spokeswoman Angel Streeter Gardner said. The shaft gear must be replaced before FDOT accepts the new bridge, she said, noting that "this will occur at no additional cost to FDOT.
